Lavin-- I am searching information about Mary Lavin. She married Edward Colligan and they lived all of their lives in Clinton County. She was born about 1850 and she died about 1911. I was told that her father and mother were Thomas and Harriet (Golden) Lavin. However, thanks to this board and the Feinburg Library at SUNY Plattsburgh, I now realize that their dates would not connect with hers. She was my great-grandmother and I would appreciate hearing from anyone else who is working on the Lavin line. (I also had James and Katherine (Kilkinney) Lavin as Thomas's parents.)

Stephen R. SMITH (b:1830? Albany County), moved to Dannamora and is believed to have helped building the prison in Dannamora. He married Aurilla LEONARD (b:1837 Quebec) and had a son Stephen Benjamin SMITH (b:29JAN1860 Dannamora). After the Civil War, they were divorced. Stephen R. SMITH moved west, Aurilla LEONARD (and son) moved to Vermont and then Massachusetts. My questions are:
1) Are there any building records for the prison in Dannamora ?
[And what role did my ancestor play in it's construction ? convict ? laborer ? supervisor ?]
2) Are there any 1850 or 1860 census records for Dannamora ?
3) Are their any marriage records for Dannamora for the 1850s and 1860s ? How about divorce records ?

Clinton Co,NY-Plattsburgh: Balch, Ebeneezer b.30 Aug 1766 in East Hartford,CT married Sarah Birchard of Becket,MA 4 Oct1791. They moved to Plattsburg, Clinton Co,NY in 1800, and both remained & are buried there. Ebeneezer Balch died in 1852. He came to Clinton Co.NY to trade in lumber, and made numerous trips to Canada to do so. At times members of his family would stay in Canada for periods of time to operate the business...
I am a descendant of a son of Ebeneezer Balch, Horatio James Balch b.22 July 1806 in Plattsburgh. Horatio James Balch married Sophronia Allard in May 1827 in Plattsburgh. He worked for his father, Ebeneezer & he & Sophronia were apparently living in 'English Canada' when their 2nd child & daughter Elizabeth Selina "Betsy" Balch was born on 21 Nov 1830 in "English Canada"--
in the federal census she consistently gives that as her birthplace, as do her 16 children during their lives.
The information I am seeking is: information on the Allard family, especially parents of Sophronia Allard Balch who was born in Vermont in 1810. Secondly information on the Balch family during the 52 years or more they lived in Plattsburgh. And finally to discover why Horatio James Allard brought his wife and very young family to the West by 1840. It is said they first came to Ohio (via the Great Lakes?) & by 1840 they were living in S.W. Indiana near Vincennes, Gibson & Knox Counties...in 1846 Horatio James Balch died, by 1847/48 Sophronia Allard Balch had remarried in Knox Co,IN to William Sutterfield who had grown children plus at least one younger son at home. This son, Issac Sutterfield married his new stepsister, my gr-greatgrandmother Elizabeth Selina Balch. William & Sophronia had 2 children more of there own, plus raising the younger Balch children. Issac & Elizabeth Balch Sutterfield moved west into southern IL by 1852, They lived in Richland County, Decker Twp, IL for the rest of their long lives and are both buried there, Elizabeth out-lived Issac & did remarry in her old age, but stayed in Richland Co.
There are many, many Sutterfield & Balch descendants in IN, IL, MO, AR & OK. I have gotten almost complete pre-Clinton information on the Balchs....they were early Plymouth Colony then to Wethersfield,CT etc. What we are all seeking is to fill in the Clinton Co,NY years.
Thank you for any help, Judy Hammond Bowman Rhodes, Rantoul, IL Additional note: Only one of Ebeneezer Balch's brothers were said to have accompanied him from MA to Plattsburgh & remained there: that brother was Timothy Balch b. 1768 in East Hartford, CT. Timothy married Ann Whitman probably in MA, and they lived in Plattsburgh from 1800 & had 9 children, numbers 1 - 3 being born in MA, and #4 -9 being born in Plattsburg. Their first child born in Plattsburgh was b.1801. I do not have the names of Timothy Balch's children, and that is another missing piece of information we are seeking.....jbr

I am presently researching the NICHOLS family tree. The first one's to enter New York immigrated from Beauharnois, Quebec, Canada in the 1850s. The head of the family was named Adolphus and was married to Exina Bomyea (sp?). They had 9 children and later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. It is believed that Adolphus had three possibly four brothers that were also from Beauharnois. Other names associated with this line of Nichols would be SILVER, TROMBLEY and GAGNIER. I am inquiring about the family name of Nichols. An Adolphus Nichols moved to I believe Churubusco, NY in the 1850s and was married to a Mary Beach. They had 9 children. Their names were Edward (my great- grandfather), Emma (Obey), Francis, George, Delia (Patnode, Babbie), Roseanna (Silver), Agnes (morlock, Henry and Thomas. I have little information about most except Edward. Edward married a Exina Bomyea (not sure of the spelling) and moved to Syracuse and eventually to Cincinnati. Edward is buried in Lot #207 in Churubusco NY cemetery. I am curious to see if anyone would be able to help me in my search to gain more information about them. I would also like to add that Adolphus had three or four brothers that were from Canada (Beauharnois, Quebec). I believe they too immigrated but I have no rock solid evidence to prove it. I do have more information available to me but it requires a trip to the public library. I would be very glad to discuss any information or questions anyone may have. I do plan to visit New York possibly in June, maybee sooner. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all!
