The Records of Marriage in the Clinton County Clerk's office are only accessible from 1908 to 1936. Earlier records may be found in the town of marriage, the church of marriage, or possibly on the head stone of the grave. Birth certificates are not always available because New York State did not require they be kept until after 1890. Churches kept the best and only complete records before 1890. Also, some information may be found in local newspapers (birth, marriage, death, etc.. The Plattsburgh Public Library has microfilm copies of local newspapers since 1811. Town and village historians are another possible source of information, depending upon the composition of their collections.
